"Great resolution, Ms. Dimond. But there's another explosive issue that also requires an alternate procedure.

I'm referring to police car chases in pursuit of a suspect. Some of these chases are reckless, irresponsible, and outright dangerous to the public. Most often, they are not necessary, because the high percentage of these cases entail the police going after petty thieves or purse snatchers. Over the past three years, several fatalities have occurred as a result of a police car chase.

I live in East Hampton, and on the fourth of July weekend, there was a minor altercation between a store owner and a customer. Someone called 911, and the customer left peacefully in his automobile. When the police arrived at the scene, after being told about the incident, they went cruising to look for "the suspect." In short, a car chase ensued on Main Street, a highly populated street by pedestrians (especially on the fourth of July). In the end, someone was hit and seriously injured by a vehicle trying to clear the way for the police cruiser. Many of the cops, over react and get a thrill by turning on their strobe lights and sirens, all in the name of "apprehending a criminal." There must be another method."

" Interesting. Worth the try. Looks like it is working. Was not aware of this program, thanks Diane for sharing this."

" Dear Ms. Dimond:
I was fascinated by your recent column entitled “Give Fugitives Safe Chance at Surrender,” concerning the Fugitive Safe Surrender Program. I am interested in finding out more about how such a program works, with an eye towards possible adoption / implementation in here in Chaves County, New Mexico.
Would you be able to send me any documentation you might have concerning how such a program actually works, or any contact information for persons who have sponsored such programs?

Thank you,

Michael Sanchez
Assistant District Attorney
