Failing To Do The Right Thing

Mother of 14

Mother of 14 test tube children

Our country is built on a foundation of laws designed to keep order in our society. Some of these laws are passed by legislatures; others are society’s laws, the ethical and moral laws that guide us.

Two stories playing out in the news these days underscore the importance of this very basic cornerstone of American life.

The California single mother of six, whose addiction to test tube babies caused her to give birth to 8 more and the President of the Peanut Corporation of America, from which salmonella tainted products were shipped, have something in common. When faced with monumental choices they chose badly…

Poisoned?

Poisoned?

…They thought of themselves first – their happiness or their paycheck – with no regard to how others would be impacted by their lousy decisions.

Parnell "let loose" poison peanuts

Parnell "let loose" poison peanuts

To make matters worse those entities we rely on to protect us from the foolish (even criminal) decisions of others failed us.

Let’s deal with 33 year old Nadya Suleman first. No husband, no job, no house of her own, her parents with whom she lives have had to declare bankruptcy under the burden and three of her 6 in-vitro-conceived children have disabilities. She decided to go back for even more in-vitro fertilizations! Her doctor presumably knew her situation but defied his own medical profession’s guidelines and implanted way too many embryos. Eight more human beings brought into the world because as Nadya put it she longed for a “huge family” to make up for the loneliness of being an only child.

Geez, I am an only child but I never thought of giving birth to my own nursery school full of children!

Suleman, who also appears to be addicted to collagen lip injections, said she gets no welfare. We now know that’s not true. She declared she’ll raise all 14 of her children alone. We know that’s impossible. Suleman must sense the public assistance spigot may dry up as she’s started a web site for donations. I for one refuse to help pay for her delusional behavior.

Maybe it would be better if the state took custody of Suleman’s babies and placed them with people who can actually afford children.

Next, let’s consider the case of the peanut company CEO, Stewart Parnell, another fantasy thinker. According to several congressional witnesses, and corroborating e-mails written by Parnell himself, he knew there was deadly salmonella in P.C.A. products. But instead of destroying the tainted items and sanitizing his plants Parnell made the choice to do a little “lab shopping” to see if a different laboratory would come up with a different test result. Really bad choice.

In the meantime, Parnell’s e-mails reveal bitter complaints about how the company is losing money. “We need to discuss this,” Parnell wrote to his plant manager. “The time lapse … is costing us huge $$ …”

Here is a man faced with the prospect that his product could kill people and he’s more worried about the bottom line, and his own paycheck. Later, via another e-mail, Parnell orders the questionable products be “let loose” to schools, nursing homes and manufacturers who make cookies, candy, crackers, ice cream, granola bars and other products Americans gobble up. It was no surprise when Parnell took the fifth when called to testify before Congress.

The result was deadly. Nearly 600 people were made so sick they reported it to health officials. To date, 9 deaths are linked to Parnell’s salmonella tainted products. Plaintiff’s lawyers are lining up to file suit against the corporation, which just conveniently filed for bankruptcy. Prosecutors are researching whether to file negligent homicide charges against Parnell.

Now, may I just ask where was the Food and Drug Administration, which admits reports of salmonella at P.C.A. plants stretched back to last summer! Where were the federally mandated inspections?

And in the case of Octo-Mom, as Nadya Suleman is now nicknamed, where was the medical community? Unlike other countries we don’t have legislation limiting in-vitro procedures. Lawmakers have left it up to the doctors to police themselves. Nice job, guys.

One could argue that the actions of both Parnell and Suleman were criminal, one crime against consumers, the other against tiny, incubated babies struggling to live.

I am the last one to call for more government regulation. But the FDA is already in place! The laws are there, the salmonella reports at A.P.C. were longstanding. Someone we taxpayers paid failed to be our backstop. I’d like to know who.

And, the medical community already has its guidelines firmly in place. The American Society For Reproductive Medicine concludes no more than two embryos should be implanted at a time in a woman Suleman’s age. Won’t even one medical association stand up and publically condemn the doctor who caused these eight babies to be born?

Too bad we can’t pass laws against short-sighted stupidity.

Lots of people dropped the ball in these cases — beyond that, our society too often looks the other way when people are screaming for help, as is the case with "octo-mom". Why did it take until there were 14 children for people to take notice?
And shouldn't the cosmetic surgeon who mutilated her face be held accountable?
In the case of the Peanut man, his crime was worse than Bernie Madoff's, who stole people's money.
The peanut man, it appears, contributed to the deaths of as many as nine people, risking many more.

I was watching Jane-Velez Mitchell last night and apparently this bloody woman has refused the offer of "free" yes "free" help with these kids. I think Gloria Allred has some sort of organization or group who were willing to help. This in itself proves the mother's complete stupidity. How can she possibly take care of 14 children??? I truly think it is impossible. The doctor who implanted her should be sued – he should know better. Then I read that he has implanted more eggs into another woman- who will have multiple babies, What is going on? This economy and our tax dollars cannot afford this. Most people have the sense to realize it but this woman…I can;t even watch her, she makes me feel ill when I see her on tv. As for the fat lips…yeh, obsession with Angelina Jolie apparently. I feel sorry for the kids…it's not their fault that their mother is a nutbag. I have to stop , I can feel myself hyperventilating cos I am so wound up.

Both cases here are shining examples of stupidity, carelessness and greed. These two pathetic individuals deserve no sympathy whatsoever from the public, however,it is the public that winds up paying the price for their actions….it is totally unfair, but, that's life.

Don't even get me started on the FDA (Fraudulent Data Administration)………it is as powerful and as little monitored as the CIA and no one on the Hill seems to care. This is the same agency which endangers the frail, disabled and elderly populations, who risk everything to participate in drug studies, by rubber-stamping study protocols allowing pharmaceutical companies to kill off these desperate patients. When this was brought to the attention of no less than half a dozen members of Congressional oversight committees, not one responded. The FDA operates in a vacuum and it is an agency which can suck the very life from each of us in more ways than one.

The doctor should be ashamed of himself. I think he thought there was potential "Dionne Quintuplets" type fame in this for him. As for "octo-mom," she too thought that fame and (more importantly) fortune would come calling, particularly as our society continues to create fake celebrities. Give some credit to "octo-grandmom," though, who apparently begged the doctor not to take the actions he took. At the end of the day, the doctor and "octo-mom" both badly miscalculated public reaction and are now paying the price. They are correctly being ridiculed as selfish and greedy characters.

Severe diverticulosis (I'm a product of the Enema Generation) prohibits my ingesting whole peanuts, so creamy p-butter is a sacred indulgence. Or was. Ergo, I'm for mailing Parnell's feet to the floor and force-feeding him 10 pounds of his poisoned product. The doctor who caused that nut job to birth all those babies likewise should be forced to eat eight throwaway placenti. Instead of punishing miscreants in the FDA, blame the congress people who made the decisions causing the FDA to be under-funded and under-staffed to the point of criminality. Funding could be extracted from Speaker Pelosi's commuting expenses.

I am really tired of hearing about this. Obviously the people who walk away with our life savings and the people who get "bailed out" so they can have million dollar bonuses are boring now. I guess the realization that we can't touch corporate America has sunk in so lets go after her.

I would like to add that although it is a bit disturbing that a doctor would let this happen…and I am really not trying to start anything here…it is no different than what we have been doing all along…it is just 8 more. When will it stop? Why did she do it? Don't know…don't really care….now if she had them terminated…or God forbid…had them and left them to die….she would be ostracized, she would be a terrible person. No one sees that she loves these babies. No one cares about that. It is all about money. All anyone is worried about is that WE will have to pay for them. We have been doing it for a long time. What would happen if she would say….win the lottery? That is money we put into something that would go to a single person….that is okay though.

"I think there is something really sickening about Suleman. Her personal choices are going to end up costing society millions, she's out of work, three of her kids have disabilities, some of the new eight will likely have problems as well, she's bailed out on a $1 mil bankruptcy. She'll never pay taxes, society will pay for all the offspring and as a single mother with that burden, I have doubts that the kids will turn out well.

The doctor ought to have his license pulled.

Also sickening is that the peanut guy will now pull a turtle maneuver and try to shield his assets from legal action for all the dead and ill. Seems America never punishes the misdeeds of corporations."

"A human being has a natural desire to have more of a good thing than he needs." (Mark
Twain) Although this theory seems to apply in both of these cases, I am not convinced that all Americans are greedy and ignorant about the so called real world. I have always been satisfied with having enough to take care of my family and a little left over for some form of outside entertainment, to have much more would be a waste for me. I have never been ashamed of being a middle class American. Those that try to earn more than they need have an avarice nature and is not greed what got us into the main troubles this country faces. The peanut company is the perfect example as to why there should be no tort reform
and the employees of the company should also have legal rights because of the owner's stupid decision making. The baby making story gives great credence to forced tubal ligation and that is a very sore subject with me, normally I would never condone legal interference with one's own body, but in some cases I think it necessary.

The doctor should be sued for implanting that many embryos. If he can't take care of 14 kids with a good paying job, how can an unemployed idiot do it? And octo-mom….get a grip! It is too easy to plead helpless and make me pay for it. As far as Parnell, sue him, too! That many people poisoned and some dead? There is no reason to be so greedy, that the food chain is tainted. No sympathy here…none at all. This was premeditated and should be in the Supreme Court…of course, we having liberal minded thinkers there too, Parnell would likely still walk. I side with Jeff Foxworthy on all of these "afterbirths"….."Here's your sign!"

"I absolutely agree with you, the lunacy that one parent could sustain so many children financially, emotionally and physically is ridiculous at best. I think all families that today exploit their non-natural multiple births by signing up for reality shows is disgraceful. The public has become financially responsible for these children.
Regarding octo-birth I think the physician that placed those embryos is partially responsible financially also for the financial and health care for those children. He made a decision also and I feel he needs to back up the decision he made.
Gosh, I remember a time when by nature's fate, she would perform a miracle and the mother would have twins, triplets, quads and quints.

Diane,

My first impression of Nadya was “wow what a stunning and intelligent young woman”. However, after hearing more of her interview, I couldn’t help but notice how quickly she answered the questions and the subtle glare in her eyes that increased as the questions became more challenging which conveyed a sinister spirit in this woman. Later I realized what I thought was sinister was more “demonic” in Nadya. I had hope this would have been a story of great joy than to realize it’s one person’s selfish lie. I pray that the state will find her unfit and place the kids in a home that can support them with the true love and guidance that they deserve. It is disgraceful what she's done.

" Medical community can have all the guidelines it wants, but they also have crooks among themselves. So, instead to rely on self-policing why not have a law? There is nothing wrong with protecting mother's and babies' health. As for adoption, I am with you on that one. The only sad part is, as any mother of multiples will tell you, that these babies are very emotionally attached to each other. Separating them will cause distress no matter how you separate them. I would go after the doctor, especially after his license.

As for the peanut guy – he would be made to eat his peanuts till he gets sick, than he can go to jail for the rest of his days. All the wealth he accumulated on his tainted product should be given to the victims. End of story."

Well written stories as usual Diane, BUT:
What I can't figure out is where the money comes from to pay for IVF at an estimated cost of
$10,000 – $25,000 and to have the stupidity of doing it again after half (50%) of the first litter
are disabled!!! Somebody is footing the bill and the "Doctor" is raking it in. But apart from the
money the question remains what about the welfare of the children?

Regarding the peanut guy, there is no doubt in my mind he should be charged with attempted or even first degree murder. I also like the idea of putting him on a peanut butter diet, perhaps at GITO.

Michael – Well, see – now YOU and I are thinking exactly alike! Where the heck did all that money come for all those in-vitro procedures? She had six kids – plus this litter of 8 – so she's undergone the procedure at least – what? – seven times? Wow, that is a big chunk of change. And now, if you'll indulge a little cattiness. Add to that cost the price of all the cosmetic surgery she's had, reported to be breast enlargement several years ago, lip injections, looks like a nose job, fancy french manicures, etc. What does Nadya Suleman know that I don't know about managing money?!

And, on the Peanut man – yeah, GITMO – not a bad idea! ~ DD
